Two Madcap Parisian Operettas

By by Offenbach & Chabrier

With this joyous double bill Israeli premier performance of “Le mariage aux lanternes” by Offenbach and “Une éducation manquée” by Chabrier, the Jerusalem Opera returns and welcomes its audience back into a magical, feathered world of chatter, prattle, twitter and gossip.
A new and spectacular production!
Stage Director – Noemi Schlosser, The Jerusalem Opera Ensemble conducted by Omer Arieli.

Director notes

“I was very excited when the Jerusalem Opera asked me to direct these two relatively unknown operettas” said the stage director Noemi Schlosser, “and I was also a bit frightened. Why have these two pieces been forgotten? As it happened with my staging of Gounod’s “La Colombe” in 2019 for the Jerusalem Opera, it became apparent that these two small works are actual pearls that fell straight into my lap, to be polished by me and brought to the stage”. About the staging and costumes, Schlosser adds, “In order to intensify the heartwarming behavior of the characters – as well as their transgressions –in a pastoral setting, I decided to present them as birds. For example, the young and fool-hardy cock boasting and brimming with testosterone, who finds it so difficult to show his love to his delicate dove, the wayward and clueless virgin. The two widows hungry for men (a peacock and a dodo) pursue love and flirt one minute and are hungry for money the next. The bird elements gave me the freedom to create a magical fairy-tale setting, without the usual farm-like backdrop. This will also be expressed in the choice of costumes that Liat Golan and I created for our feathered creatures.”
