The Barber of Seville

By Gioachino Rossini

libretto: Cesare Sterbini Rossini’s world premier of the opera took place in Rome, 200 years ago, when he was only 24 and at the beginning of a promising career.

""The recently established Jerusalem Opera deserves congratulations for a successful, fast-moving production of Rossini's opera "The Barber of Seville"

Director notes

This production of “The Barber of Seville”, in cooperation with the Piccolo Festival del Friuli Venezia Giulia, has already won praise from audiences and critics for its first performances in Italy. It has now arrived in Israel. Under my stage direction, the original plot now takes place in a grocery shop owned by Rosina, among the colorful fruit and vegetable crates. The manager of the store (Bartolo) plans to marry Rosina and the wily young suitor (Count Almaviva), is constantly hanging around the shop, in different disguises, bothering Bartolo and trying to win the hand of Rosina, with the help of Figaro. The performance preserves the original concept of the opera and incorporates different artistic languages, with an emphasis on precise acting – as energetic and dynamic as Rossini’s music, gradually growing and increasing in speed while retaining delicacy and sensitivity. Each role is not only sung and acted, but is interpreted with a vitality that reaches directly into the heart of each member of the audience
